to Dave (Oct 16th 2009): Your welcome. Ever since I was young, I’ve been dismayed by this odd contempt for human beauty. It’s an unhealthy, ugly quirk in the psyche of many Americans. Describing a brighter future for the U.S. in one of his speeches, John F. Kennedy envisioned an America which would “not be afraid of its own beauty.” We still have a long way to go. Of course we can support the arts and those who tell the truth.

Human beauty is temporary; if you want to preserve it, you must sculpt, paint or photograph it. Or you could just sit on your duff and let it be destroyed gradually by Father Time – there is nothing virtuous or “Christian” in letting time have its way.
It amazes me that in the U.S.A., some of us have this vendetta against the excellence of the human body. These people can appreciate photos showing the beauty of Mount Rainier, Niagara Falls, an apple orchard or a mountain lion, but if it’s a robust and attractive young woman or man, then they are suddenly filled with contempt for beauty. Hmmm – sounds like a cultural mental disorder.
Many of these same people have no problem with the nudity in the movies “Holocaust” or “Schindler’s List,” probably because they show the body at its most unattractive, degraded and vulnerable. The message being sent: Whatever you do, do not show healthy, attractive human bodies in a positive light. Hmmmm – sounds like a cultural neurosis.
It sets a good example when people blessed by God with physical beauty allow that excellence to be preserved against the ravages of time through art. I would never advocate casting giant tarps over Mount Rainier or Niagara Falls; so American extremists, please make peace with the human body.
