Bucs fire Gruden; already hire replacement Raheem Morris
In a surprising move Friday evening, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have fired head coach Jon Gruden.
“These decisions are never easy. This is the toughest decision you can make for an NFL franchise. … Jon and Bruce are consummate professionals. They’ve poured their heart and soul into this franchise,” Buccaneers co-chairman Joel Glazer said. “It’s really been an honor to work with them. They gave their all.”
Following the 2001 season the Bucs wanted Gruden so bad they traded the Oakland Raiders two first round draft picks and two 2nd rounders just to get him in Tampa. The move paid off, he won a Super Bowl right away and for awhile he was considered the best coach in the league. But since then he hasn’t won a playoff game and his players have slowly grown tired of his huge ego.
That’s why the front office didn’t waste anytime hiring his replacement, players coach Raheem Morris.
Morris spent last season as the Bucs defensive backs coach but the players absolutely love him and would run through walls for him.
I wouldn’t be completely shocked if Gruden ended up back with the Raiders as their new head coach.
