Billy Wagner will have a chance to pitch in the pennant race after the New York Mets traded him to the Boston Red Sox for two unnamed players on Tuesday.

“He woke up and decided he wanted to join a team in the middle of a pennant race to have a chance to pitch in October and to have a chance to get a ring, which he’s never done,” Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein said. “There were some ups and downs and turns in the decision, but in the end he told us he woke up today and really wanted a chance to win a World Series, and came here for all the right reasons.”

The 38-year-old pitcher will officially join the team in Boston on Thursday.

David Ortiz has finally made his first statements regarding his positive test for an illegal substance back in 2003. Ortiz swears he has never taken steroids and he blames it all on over the counter vitamins.

“I definitely was a little bit careless back in those days when I was buying supplements and vitamins over the counter — legal supplements, legal vitamins over the counter — but I never buy steroids or use steroids,” Ortiz said.

The Red Sox slugger also said he’s spent countless hours trying to figure out what exactly triggered his positive test, but nobody can tell him.

“This past week, I’ve been really confused and frustrated,” he said. “I started looking for answers, and nobody gives me an answer.”

Quit the BS Ortiz. Everyone knows you took steroids so stop lying and just admit it. The truth will eventually come out and when it does your reputation will never be salvageable.

The Pittsburgh Pirates traded first baseman Adam LaRoche to the Boston Red Sox for minor league pitcher Hunter Strickland and shortstop Argenis Díaz on Wednesday.

“I’m grateful for the opportunity that a team like that wants me,” LaRoche said.

General Manager Theo Epstein said LaRoche is exactly the type of the player the Red Sox have been looking for.

“We’ve been in the market for a player who can do some damage against right-handed pitching and help our depth at the corner infield,” Red Sox GM Theo Epstein said in a conference call. “This was a chance to get at a very reasonable acquisition cost a player that … leaves us in condition to look for more impact before the trading deadline.”

Not sure LaRoche really improves their team any, but he certainly can’t hurt.

The Boston Red Sow gave left-hander Jon Lester a new 5-year contract worth $30 on Sunday. The deal could be worth $42.75 million is Lester decides to exercise a club option in 2014.

“We’re extremely happy to have gotten this done,” General Manager Theo Epstein said. “Jon is already a big part of this organization, and we project him to play an even greater role going forward.”

Red Sox fans are happy to know that one of their favorite players won’t be leaving for a long time. And there is no other team Lester would rather play for.

“It’s a great organization. Besides the Yankees, it’s the most storied organization in baseball,” Lester said.

Red Sox Nation couldn’t be happier right now.

Boston Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia has been named the AL Most Valuable Player.

“Last year, when I came to spring training, everybody was talking about a sophomore slump,” Pedroia said.

“Next year, in 2009, they’re going to think last year was a fluke. So I’ve got to prepare myself in the off-season to get ready for a long season and try to be good again.”

Pedroia doesn’t look like an amazing athlete but looks can be very deceiving.

“I’m not the biggest guy in the world. I don’t have that many tools,” he said. “If you saw me walking down the street, you wouldn’t think I’m a baseball player.”

Pedroia received 16 of 28 first-place votes cast by members of the Baseball Writers’ Association of America. He finished 60-points ahead of Minnesota’s first baseman Justin Morneau.

The Tampa Bay Rays will be in their first World Series ever after beating the Boston Red Sox 3-1 in Game 7 of the ALCS.

“It’s unbelievable,” Rays center fielder B.J. Upton said. “We battled a lot of adversity this year. We stuck together as a team.”

The defending champions fought hard but in the end they lost to a better team.

“We played as hard as we could. Just kind of ran out of magic,” Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia said. “I’m proud of everybody, but it’s obviously a tough loss.”

“We didn’t get as far as we wanted,” Boston manager Terry Francona said. “We came out to win and go to the World Series and we didn’t accomplish that.”

The Rays will host the Philadelphia Phillies in Game 1 of the World Series on Wednesday night.

The Boston Red Sox World Series hopes are still alive after they beat the Rays 8-7 Thursday night.

The first six innings we did nothing. They had their way with us every way possible,” Red Sox manager Terry Francona said.

“And then this place came unglued, and we’ve seen that before. But because of the situation we’re in, it just — that was pretty magical.”

The Red Sox trailed Tampa Bay 7-0 with two outs in the 7th inning but when David Ortiz hit a three-run homer their luck changed for the night.

“It was pretty much the most amazing thing I’ve ever been a part of,” Red Sox center fielder Coco Crisp said. “To be down 7-0 in an elimination game and be able to come back.”

The ALCS will resume on Saturday night.

The Tampa Bay Rays have taken a 3-1 lead over the Boston Red Sox after their dominent 13-4 victory Tuesday night.

“We know we’re real close now to going to the World Series,” Rays left fielder Carl Crawford said.

“A lot of guys won’t say it: There’s a nice vibe right now.”

The series will continue tomorrow at Fenway Park for game 5. If the Red Sox lose they’re eliminated and the Rays will be in the World Series.

The Tampa Bay Rays rolled past the Boston Red Sox 9-1 to take a 2-1 lead in the AL championship series.

B.J. Upton and Rocco Baldelli highlighted the night by hitting three-run homers.

“Solo home runs are good, but three-run homers mean so much more. It put us up 4-0 and gave us all the confidence in the world,” said Upton.

“We feel the sky’s the limit for us all year. To beat (Lester), and to beat him at Fenway, hopefully it’ll have a snowball effect.”

Game 4 will take place tonight in Boston.

The Boston Red Sox beat the Los Angeles Angels 3-2 Monday night, clinching the best of five AL Division Series 3-1.

The Red Sox will now look forward to facing the Tampa Bay Rays starting Friday night in the best of seven AL Championship Series.

“I can’t wait to get it going,” pitcher Red Sox Josh Beckett said. “But we’ve got a few days off to enjoy this.”

If Boston can get past the Rays they will have a chance at their third title in five years.
