Former New York Knicks coach Isiah Thomas has accepted an offer making him the new head coach of the Florida International basketball team.

“I’m committed to growing something here, and strongly believe that over time, we’ll put a team on the floor that everyone at FIU can be proud of,” Thomas said.

Thomas has yet to do anything good as a basketball coach but FIU athletic director Pete Garcia thinks the hire will help sell a lot of tickets.

“I know he is a good person,” Garcia said. “Isiah is going to give our fans and alumni a lot of reasons to be excited.”

Thomas should be for one heck of a recruiter but he’ll still be a horrible coach.

Jim Calhoun has said he has every intention to return as Connecticut’s head basketball coach for next season.

“It is my full intention to return for the 2009-10 season,” Calhoun said. “I look forward to coaching next season and to continuing as the head coach at Connecticut into the future. In many ways, the journey of this past season has made me realize how much I love coaching this game, how much I love my kids and how much I enjoy being at Connecticut.”

Calhoun’s career record of 805-342 ranks #6 in NCAA Division I history for career wins. Despite all the off-the-court issues he’s one heck of a coach.

Michael Jordan’s youngest son Marcus has verbally committed to play college basketball for Central Florida next season.

“Marcus was looking for a place he could play, have an impact and feel comfortable on campus,” his high school coach Tyrone Slaughter said. “The family felt there was no need to continue the recruiting process.”

Marcus led Whitney Young High School of Chicago the the state 4A title this past month and led the team in scoring for the semifinal and the state championship game.

The 6-foot-3 guard chose UCF over Toledo, Iowa and Davidson.

“UCF really showed him that they wanted him for more than just his name and he was ready to make a decision as soon as he felt comfortable,” Jordan’s AAU coach Brian Davis said. “UCF made him feel comfortable. They wanted Marcus to come in to contribute right away and made him feel like he could make a big impact. They wanted Marcus for Marcus.”

I feel bad for Marcus. There’s absolutly no way he’ll ever see the light of day from behind his dads shadow.

The Connecticut Huskies women’s basketball team finished the season with an undefeated 39-0 record after dominating Louisville 76-54 to win their sixth National Championship.

“We have nothing to be disappointed about,” Louisville’s forward Angel McCoughtry said. “We’re going to hold our heads up high.”

UConn’s junior center Tina Charles led the Huskies in points (25) and rebounds (19).

“Tina Charles did an outstanding job of intimidating us,” Louisville Coach Jeff Walz said. “We had no answer for her.”

After the win Connecticut’s coach Geno Auriemma was looking forward to a good nights rest without needing to worry about an upcoming game.

“I’m so overwhelmed how I feel about the way it ended,” Auriemma said. “This is the first time since the brackets came out I didn’t feel like I’m going to get sick, physically sick, thinking about everything that was ahead of us.”

The North Carolina Tar Heels slaughtered the Michigan State Spartans 89-72 on Monday night to clain their 5th National Championship.

“The best team won,” Michigan State coach Tom Izzo said. “That’s an easy statement to make.”

The Tar Heels led 55-34 at halftime which breaks a 42-year old record for the biggest lead and the most points scored at the half.

“We handled injuries, handled some losses” this season, Williams said. “The youngsters standing behind me are great, great young men. I’m the luckiest coach in America, I can tell you that.”

The Spartans had high praise for the Champs.

“You’ve got six NBA players that could be drafted in the first round or early second,” Spartans guard Travis Walton said. “You’re looking at a team that could probably beat the worst team in the NBA.”

The game itself was very one-sided and quite boring but nonetheless congratulations North Carolina!

The undefeated Connecticut Huskies women’s basketball team advanced to the championship game after their dominating 83-64 performance over the Stanford Cardinals.

“Connecticut was head and shoulders above us tonight,” Stanford coach Tara VanDerveer said.

Connecticut will now face Big East rival Louisville in the championship game.

I wish we were playing anyone but Louisville,” Coach Geno Auriemma said. “Anyone, I don’t care who. The last team you want to play is a team you beat the way we beat them the two times we beat them, especially the last time we played them.”

Sports Crunch is predicting a Connecticut win over Louisville but we’re expecting a very close game.

The Louisville women’s basketball team has advanced to the championship game after beating Oklahoma in a close 61-59 semifinal match on Sunday.

“Nobody expected us to be here,” Angel McCoughtry said after the game. “We have not one high school All-American on our team, but these girls worked hard. I’m so proud of them.”

Louisville was down 12 points at halftime but got back into the game with a 15-1 run in the 2nd half.

“Just a group of kids in that locker room that I challenged at halftime as much as I could have challenged a group,” Louisville coach Jeff Walz said.

Walz knew his team could beat Oklahoma, he just had to get them to believe it.

“I told them, ‘If you want to come out here and compete and follow our game plan, tell me,” Walz said. “And they’re all like ‘Yeah, we will, we will.’ And I thought we did a great job.”

The Michigan State Spartans beat the Connecticut Huskies in their final four match-up 82-73 on Saturday reaching their first title game since 2000.

The victory has helped many Michigan State locals take their minds off of their current economic crisis.

“I hope we were a ray of sunshine, a distraction for them, a diversion, anything else we can be,” coach Tom Izzo said. “We’re not done yet, so hopefully we can continue to make them feel a little better and us feel a lot better.”

The UConn players were devasted after the loss but their coach Jim Calhoun is extremely proud of his squad.

“I’ve got a lot of kids in there crying right now,” Calhoun said. “But they had a great season. It hasn’t been that easy to stay focused the past few weeks. But I give [Izzo] a great deal of credit.”

Tim Floyd has turned down an offer to coach at Arizona to stay with the USC Trojans.

“We’re obviously delighted that coach Floyd is staying,” USC athletic director Mike Garrett said. “He has done historic things at USC in his short time, getting us to three consecutive NCAA playoffs and winning 20 games for three straight years and capturing the Pac-10 tournament title this year. And the future is very bright here under Tim’s direction.”

Even though Floyd has shown USC that he is committed to stay with them for the long haul they still haven’t offered him an extension.

“I have three years left on my contract,” he said. “No, there have not been any changes made that I am aware of. I would like another year or two. I think that would be great. I would like for this to be my last job.”

Do the right thing USC, give the man a long-term deal.

Despite many rumors Rick Pitino has no plans to leave for Arizona or anywhere else this offseason. Petino is happy 100% commited to Louisville and doesn’t have any plans to leave anytime soon.

“I’m not a candidate for the Arizona job and I never was,” Petino said. “I am not interested in any job. I am definitely returning to the University of Louisville.”

Louisville fans are happy Petino is staying put for another year while UA has to be disappointed since there’s absolutly no way they’ll find a better coach than Petino.
