The headline is not a misprint! The Detriot Lions did actually finally win a football game. They managed to beat the Washington Redskins, 19-14, on Sunday afternoon, ending their 19-game losing streak.

“We not only got the monkey off our back, we got King Kong off our back,” said Lions owner William Clay Ford. “I’m hoping that this gets us over that hump and gives us a winning attitude.”

Before Sunday, the Lions hadn’t won a game since 2007!

“We went a whole season without feeling like this [victory], so you have to take it in and enjoy,” Lions center Dominic Raiola said.

Congratulations Detroit!!! Now sit back and watch the Cleveland Browns as they try to duplicate your winless 2008 season.

Although Tony Romo was trying to impersonate a blind quarterback during the debut of the brand new Cowboys stadium on Sunday, Owner Jerry Jones still backs him 100%.

You’d like for him not to have a day like that,” Jones said. “But when everybody is pointing fingers, when it didn’t go good, then you want someone who can walk into that huddle in the next snap at practice, the next snap in the ballgame and walk out there and cut and shoot and play like they just won the Super Bowl. That’s a great quarterback.”

Meanwhile, former Cowboys legend Tony Dorsett hates Romo with a passion.

“I don’t know why on God’s Earth Tony Romo has been anointed a superstar in the National Football League,” Hall of Fame running back Tony Dorsett told Fox Sports Radio. “Tony is very young in his career. Not to say you can’t be young in your career and be a superstar because you’ve got one up there in Minnesota in Adrian Peterson.

“But the thing is this: You have a guy who hasn’t done much, and quarterbacks in the NFL, most of them go through this growing curve. He hasn’t gone through that growing curve, but he was anointed this great player all of a sudden. Now he’s having to live up to that. And obviously Tony has some deficiencies.”

Romo isn’t a football star, he’s a celebrity quarterback. He isn’t known for his talent on the field, he’s known for dating Carrie Underwood and Jessica Simpson. As a quarterback the dude downright stinks.

With just 37 seconds remaining in the game, future Hall of Fame linebacker Ray Lewis made a spectacular play in the backfield – stopping Darren Sproles and the San Diego Chargers on 4th and 2 at the Ravens 15 yard line.

Lewis is calling it the best play of his 14-year career.

“That was probably one of the greatest plays of my career, because of my team — because of what we did as a team,” Lewis said.

The New York Jets proved that they’re a force to be reckoned with after they completely shut down Tom Brady and the Patriots offense, defeating them 16-9 on Sunday.

“We believe that we are the better team today,” Jets head coach Rex Ryan said. “We went out and showed it. I think our fans are huge in this victory.”

Tom Brady looked horrible during the loss. He never managed to find the endzone and he finished the game with a pathetic 53.1 passer rating.

I’ve got to do a better job,” Brady said. “They [penalties] don’t come up very often, but when they do, they hurt. And they hurt us today.”

Belichick has a lot of work to do before we can call the Patriots a Super Bowl contender this season. The entire offense is out of sync and their lack of a running game will kill them against any good defense.

New York Jets free safety Kerry Rhodes was worried the New England Patriots wouldn’t be pumped up for their game on Sunday so he was nice and gave them the following bulletin board material.

“You go out from the first quarter on, from the first play on, and try to embarrass them,” Rhodes said. “Not just go out there and try to win, try to embarrass them. Try to make them feel bad when they leave here. We don’t want to just beat them. We want to send a message to them, ‘We’re not backing down from you and we expect to win this game, and it’s not going to be luck, it’s not going to be a mistake.’ ”

To make matters worse, Rhodes promised to hit Brady hard and often.

“We will hit him more than six times. I promise you that,” Rhodes said. “I’m sure if somebody is around his leg, or he feels pressure below, he’s not going to step into his throw.”

Rhodes is going to feel pretty stupid when the Patriots beat the Jets by 30+ points on Sunday.

The NFL season has just started, but it’s never too soon to declare the best quote of the season, is it? This quote came from NFL Announcer Chris Myers when he was discussing Larry Foote’s transition from Pittsburgh to Detroit.

“Going from two Super Bowls in Pittsburgh to the winless Detroit team — that’s like going from dating Beyonce to Whoopi Goldberg,” Myers said.

The New England Patriots were heavy favorites leading into their Monday night game against the Buffalo Bills, but with less than 3 minutes left in the game they were behind by two possessions. Yet, somehow Bill Belichick was able to pull a 25-24 victory out of his ass.

With 2:06 left on the clock Brady hooked up with his tight end, Benjamin Watson, making it a 5 point game. That’s when Belichick had to decide if he wanted to go for an onside kick or not. He decided to kick it deep into the hands of Bills returner Leodis McKelvin, who like an idiot ran the ball out of the endzone instead of taking the touchback. That’s when magic happened.

Patriots’ Brandon Meriweather was able to get a bear hug on McKelvin, standing him up in a vulnerable position, and allowing teammate Pierre Woods to strip the ball.

Once Brady had the ball back he wasn’t going to be denied. He hit Watson again for a 16-yard touchdown with just 50 seconds left on the clock.

I don’t know how the Patriots do it, but they just keep pulling lucky stars out of their ass.

Carolina Panthers coach John Fox has decided quarterback Jake Delhomme will remain his starter even after the 34-year old threw 4 interceptions and lost a fumble during Sunday’s 38-10 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.

“It’s not just Jake. We just didn’t execute very well in the passing game,” Fox said. “A couple of those third-and-longs I wish we had run our patented draw instead of screens. Because that resulted in two touchdowns, one sack fumble and one interception.”

Fox even went as far as comparing Delhomme to Tiger Woods and Roger Federer.

“It’s like Tiger Woods doesn’t win every tournament. [Roger] Federer doesn’t win every tournament,” Fox said. “There’s a lot of people out there that practice and get paid, too.”

We feel bad for Panthers fans. They have a great running game, one of the best receivers in the league and a strong defense, yet they’ll never winit all because their QB stinks. Sucks for them.

Less than a month after joining the Minnesota Vikings, Brett Favre was among the five players elected as a team captain.

“You can’t coach chemistry,” Favre told reporters. “You can’t fake it. It has to happen. You have to believe in one another and that is ongoing. This is a good group of guys; it really is. As I told them, I am honored to be a part of this team.”

Favre may be a captain, but Adrian Peterson is the only reason the Vikings will have a chance at making a playoff run. On Sunday, Peterson tore up the entire Cleveland Browns defense when he rushed for 18 yards and 3 touchdowns. And he did it all while trying to fight off the stomach flu.

“I gagged myself a couple times trying to get everything in my stomach out,” Peterson said. “Normally it makes me feel better and it did. I came in and got an IV and felt recharged and rejuvenated and was ready to go to work.”

Peterson may have a chance to break the single season rushing record this year.

On Thursday, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said team owners are preparing for an uncapped 2010 NFL season since negotiations for a new collective bargaining agreement are at a stand still.

“Because of the timing, we recognize there’s a strong reality there will be an uncapped year, and the owners have planned for it,” Goodell said. “What the owners’ intent is is to get an agreement.”

Having a strict salary cap is what makes the NFL the number one sport in America. For the sake of the league and all of it’s fans, we hope a new deal gets done before the 2010 season.
