USC running back Stafon Johnson is in critical but stable condition after undergoing more than seven hours of surgery following a freak weight lifting accident that crushed his neck and larynx.

“It [weight bar] hit him with a lot of force, and it hurt him,” coach Pete Carroll. “No broken bones as far as I understand, but he’s got some damage in there somewhere, and they’re working it out, trying to figure out what it is. … It is serious. He did get hurt, so we don’t know exactly what it is, and they’re not going to know until they go through the surgery.”

Johnson, 5-foot-11, 210-pound senior, is currently the Trojans second-leading rusher and their goal-line specialist, but he is not expected to play anymore this season.

We hope he can make a full recovery.

Heading into their game against Washington, the USC Trojans were ranked #3 in the country. After the shocking loss to Washington, the AP was generous and only dropped them 9 spots to #12. Considering the Huskies didn’t win a single game last season, the Trojans are lucky they didn’t fall out of the top 25 entirely.

Meanwhile, Washington found themselves ranked #24 in the AP poll. Coach Steve Sarkisian knew that was only going to be a matter of time.

“We said early on that it wasn’t going to take us very long,” Sarkisian said. “I think maybe some people outside our own little domain thought that that was just press-conference-speak.”

Without freshman Matt Barkley, the #3 ranked USC Trojans were upset by the Washington Huskies, 16-13, on Saturday. After the HUGE upset, USC players acted like babies and refused to give Washington any credit for winning the game.

“Washington wasn’t the better team. They just outplayed us,” USC running back Joe McKnight said. “Clearly, we have superior athletes. But hard work beats athleticism any day.”

Actually Joe, Washington beat you – that makes them the better team. The entire USC team, including head coach Pete Carrol, needs to stop being babies and give Washington some credit. The score clearly indicates they were the better team.

USC Trojans head coach Pete Carroll has names true freshman Matt Barkley as their starting quarterback for their season opener on September 5th against San Jose State.

“He’s the starting quarterback at USC — it’s not a one-game deal,” Carroll said. “He seized the opportunity that was in front of him and took control. He deserves all the credit in the world, and we expect nothing but great things from him.”

Barkley beat out Aaron Corp and Mitch Mustain for the job. He is believed to be the first true freshman to ever start a season opener game for the Trojans.

“He has exceeded all our expectations,” Carroll said in a statement. “He has all the physical ability. He has the mentality and temperament to handle the position. His personality is very well received by all the players, and he’s extremely talented. At this point, he’s ready to be the guy for us.”

Barkley is a talented kid, but he’s sure to struggle as a true freshman. We’re not expecting much from the Trojans this season.

Tim Floyd has announced his resignation as the Southern California basketball coach after he allegedly violated NCAA rules.

“As of 1:00 p.m. today, I am resigning as head basketball coach at the University of Southern California. I deeply appreciate the opportunity afforded me by the university, as well as the chance to know and work with some of the finest young men in college athletics. Unfortunately, I no longer feel I can offer the level of enthusiasm to my duties that is deserved by the university, my coaching staff, my players, their families, and the supporters of the University of Southern California. I always promised myself and my family that if I ever felt I could no longer give my full enthusiasm to a job, that I should leave it to others who could. I intend to contact my coaching staff and my players in coming days and weeks to tell them how much each of them means to me. I wish the best to USC and to my successor.”

Floyd really had no other option but to resign after he reports surfaces last month that he gave $1,000 in cash to a man who helped influence O.J. Mayo’s decision to play for the Trojans.

Tim Floyd has turned down an offer to coach at Arizona to stay with the USC Trojans.

“We’re obviously delighted that coach Floyd is staying,” USC athletic director Mike Garrett said. “He has done historic things at USC in his short time, getting us to three consecutive NCAA playoffs and winning 20 games for three straight years and capturing the Pac-10 tournament title this year. And the future is very bright here under Tim’s direction.”

Even though Floyd has shown USC that he is committed to stay with them for the long haul they still haven’t offered him an extension.

“I have three years left on my contract,” he said. “No, there have not been any changes made that I am aware of. I would like another year or two. I think that would be great. I would like for this to be my last job.”

Do the right thing USC, give the man a long-term deal.
