Charles Barkley calls Auburn racist

Auburn alum Charles Barkley thinks racism is the only reason the Tigers hired Gene Chizik as their new head coach instead of Buffalo’s head coach Turner Gill.

“I think race was the No. 1 factor,” said Barkley. “You can say it’s not about race, but you can’t compare the two resumes and say [Chizik] deserved the job. Out of all the coaches they interviewed, Chizik probably had the worst resume.”

Chizik does have a horrible resume, in the 2 years he spent as the head coach of Iowa State his overall record was just 5 wins and 19 losses. Meanwhile, Gill led his Buffalo team to their first MAC championship ever.

So why did Auburn hire Chizik? I’m not sure but racism didn’t have anything to do with it. Millions of white Americans went out and voted for a black president so racism really can’t be used as an excuse for anymore.

I’m an Auburn alumnus, class of’78. Racism was quite evident during the ’70s at AU. One need only look at the role given to the first black AU cheerleader (a male who was not allowed to have a female cheerleading partner– No black hands on white chicks’ butts at AU!). I’d be willing to bet that more AU grads voted for McCain than Obama, since the state of Alabama was overwhelmingly pro-McCain. Since you argue that millions of whites voting for Obama means millions of whites are not racist, it sounds like you’re suggesting that those who voted for McCain are perhaps indeed racist.

You also admit that you do not know why AU hired Chizik, yet you KNOW that racism was not a factor. Hmmm . . . Contradiction after contradiction, my friend. AU has always been behind the times, so it makes sense that racism still lingers in the ugliest village on the plains.

I agree with the following poster. I am a current Auburn student and have seen many times the racist acts that go on around this campus. Just a few years back a frat had a kkk party with a “lynching” as the main entertainment source. The frat is no longer allowed at auburn, but that could have been simply to save face. The student population here is quite commonly racist. Being an Alabama resident all my life, and forcing myself to interact with a variety of peoples, I discovered that racism is alive and well in this state. It’s quite sad actually…
