Former Oakland Raiders head coach Lane Kiffin will be the new head coach for the Tennessee Volunteers.
“We had unbelievable interest from great coaches,” athletic director Mike Hamilton said.
“When it was all said and done, we felt like Lane Kiffin was a perfect fit for Tennessee. He’s energetic, charismatic, consumed with recruiting and has had a lifelong love affair with football.”
Kiffin will be replacing Phillip Fulmer who spent 17 seasons as the Vols coach.
Rumor has it, Lane Kiffin’s dad Monte will follow him to Tennessee as their defensive coordinator.
“It’s all just speculation,” Monte Kiffin said. “That’s all it is. I can honestly tell you it’s just speculation. Just like it came up with the Raiders. It came up two years ago. It came up last year. I’m still here.”
Monte is widly regarded around the NFL as the best defensive coordinator in the league and he would be forced to take a huge paycut as a college football coordinator.
All in all Lane is a good hire for Tennessee but it will take him a couple seasons to re-adjust back to coaching in college. As for Monte, I don’t see him leaving the Bucs anytime soon.
