Michael Phelps Sets World Record, Wins Gold Medal Number One

Michael Phelps set a new World Record in the Men’s 400m Individual Medley, finishing in a dominating 4:03.84, almost three seconds faster than silver medalist Laszlo Cseh (Hungary) and almost four seconds faster than fellow American Ryan Lochte who won the bronze.
Phelps is now one for one in his effort to set a new record by winning eight gold medals at these Olympics, which would be one better than Michael Spitz’s seven in 1972.
Phelps briefly fell back to second place during the backstroke portion of the medley, but kicked it in during the butterfly and then blew everyone away in freestyle. His final leg was 56.79sec, the fastest finish ever in a 400m Medley.
Following the race the US national anthem weirdly cutout halfway through with a screeching sound, prompting laughter from Phelps and Lochte on the medal stand.
