NFL Hall of Fame coach and legendary broadcaster John Madden has decided to retire from the booth after 30 years of calling games.

“It’s time,” Madden said in a statement following the announcement. “I’m 73 years old. My 50th wedding anniversary is this fall. I have two great sons and their families and my five grandchildren are at an age now when they know when I’m home and, more importantly, when I’m not.

“I still love every part of it — the travel, the practices, the game film, the games, seeing old friends and meeting new people… but I know this is the right time.”.

The NFL would not be what it is today without John Madden. He is a legend and the best broadcaster the sports world has ever seen. I can’t begin to imagine watching an entire football season without watching Madden call a game.

He will be greatly missed.
