Patriots Franchise Matt Cassel
As expected the New England Patriots have placed the franchise tag on backup QB Matt Cassel.
“Matt has been a pleasure to coach his entire career and last season in particular, when his years of hard work and commitment resulted in a most impressive performance,” Patriots coach Bill Belichick said in a statement. “We look forward to working with Matt again in 2009.”
If Cassel signs the franchise designation he’ll be guaranteed $14.65 million next season but the Patriots could also trade him if they’re confident Tom Brady will be healthy and ready to go for the season opener.
It sounds like Brady’s rehab is going well right now; if that’s the case expect Cassel to get traded this summer.
