Michael Phelps still has a chance at 8 gold medals after teammate Jason Lezak was able to beat France’s Alain Bernard by just 0.08 of a second in the 4×100-Meter Freestyle Relay.

“Unbelievable,” a very excited Phelps said “Jason finished that race better than we could even ask for. I was fired up. Going into that last 50, I was like, ‘Aw, this is going to be a close race.’ Jason’s last 10 or 15 meters were incredible.”

Lezak was behind early in the relay but he never doubted himself.

“I never lost hope,” said Lezak. “I don’t know how I was able to take it back that fast, because I’ve never been able to come anywhere near that for the last 50.”
